I can certainly understand the argument that cost is a huge factor in traveling long distances to play events. Not everyone is capable of paying a huge team fee then absorb the other related travel costs for parents and siblings for far flung travel.
However, as I posted in a previous thread....Most Kentucky teams should be able to compete at Bowling Green in an ASA Regional Qualifier like we had this year. We had 3 teams participate 2 from KY 1 from Chicago. Put that event in California and you have 50 teams. ASA state was at least better attended.
Every competitive team should have ASA state and whatever other National Qualifier we have that year on the schedule. There are also good ASA events in southern Indiana and Southern Illinois....Stepping up the level does not have to be crazy expensive.
I have not been on in a while, but found this to be a very good discussion topic to throw my two cents into. My daughter lives in Western Ky. and plays ball for a team out of Southern Illionis the "Southern Force". I had to do this because she has dreams of playing College softball. I have been around ball for more than twenty years and have gained valuable information over this time involving the recruiting process. The golden rule in this process is exposure. Now this does not have to be across the country depending on what level softball college your dd has hopes of playing softball for. Another words D-1 down to NAIA. If your daughter hopes to play for a top twenty softball school in the SEC or other magor conference then yes I beleive exposure at large College showcase tournaments and playing ASA softball is very necessary. If your dd has hopes of a smaller school then Magor showcases are not necessary locall ones would be suffient even though schools like U.K. Southern Illionis Univeristy and U.T. Martin attend the large ones also. We have played in the U.S.S.A. World Series on a former team. It was a great expierence for my dd to attend these tournaments at a national level to be exposed to that type of national tournament and our team did fairly well on both occassions for a team of local girls. You guys better watch out for Marshall County in a couple of years:) We recently return from the ASA nationals in Marietta, Goergia. The Force finished 17th out of 122 teams from across the country including the Louisville Lady Sluggers. A great orginization, I must say who also finished well. The point I'm trying to make is college softball is not every girls dream, but if it is ASA is the kind of softball you need to play. I personally saw at least 5 college coaches from Wisconsin to Georgia at the 14-U nationals. And when we attending a exposure event like Kansas City there were at least a hundred major college coaches present. I personally feel that if the local teams would register with ASA and support it Kentucky Softball would come ahead. If tournaments would register with Ky. ASA and play under ASA rules it would be a start. If every coach and tournament director would support ASA more teams from Kentucky would get births to the Nationals. If girls are serious enough to play softball on a travel team they must have some consideration to play at the college level.
For anybody interested in being a part of the Southern Force out of Johnson City Illionis 2009 ASA state champions and finished 17th at the ASA Nationals tryouts will be August 17, 2009 at the University of Illionis softball field. I do not have a time as of yet and yes there is a team fee and yes you will have travel but this year we drove all tournament sites within 5 hours. If any one is interested contact me at theonlynatural@hotmail.com
x-bucket I stopped and watched a Force game at Nationals. You had a very nice team. Had a chance to speak to some parents and they were very nice as well.
