I saw a play this weekend where an umpire did not make any call and I could not believe it. There was a play at home. Pitcher came in to cover as the catcher was retrieving a passed ball. The catcher threw the ball to the pitcher standing at home plate. The runner plowed into the pitcher who was making the play at home. The runner made no attempt to slide but rather plowed into the player and then took her hand and swatted the ball out of the her hand allowing another run to score as the ball went flying about 10 feet. The umpire made no call. If you can't call player interference then what about a dead ball when the runner deliberately swatted the ball away?
I could be wrong, but my understanding is that if there is a play at the plate, a slide must be attempted or the runner can be called out. I have seen a similar play at the plate in HS baseball, and have seen the runner ejected from the game for plowing thru the catcher/pitcher at the plate.
Remember the whole A-Rod thing in the majors against the Red Sox? He swatted at the ball and it was deemed illegal and he was called out and Dead ball. I can't fathom why softball's rules would be any different. I guess the real question is whether the ump saw the swipe of the ball. I would be willing to bet he(or she) didn't. Asking some of these umps to watch tag ups and leaving early is hard enough..... ;-)
As far as sliding at the plate, if it's not a rule, it should be an out for no slide at the plate. I think it is a rule and no one knows it.
What a bummer, as you can tell I don't like it when people take advantage of things and act outside the spirit of the game.
